These mountains are named after Sir Hugh Munro (1856–1919), who first cataloged the 283 highest mountains in Scotland in the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s journal in 1891. Today, the official list of Munros contains 282 peaks (and 227 'tops'). The first person to become a 'compleater' (someone who has climbed all the Munros) was Rev A. E. Robertson in 1901. Unfortunately, Sir Hugh Munro himself never completed his list, passing away during the flu epidemic at the end of World War I with three peaks left to climb. Munro bagging has since become a popular pursuit among British walkers and mountaineers. After Sir Hugh's death, the Scottish Mountaineering Club took over the task of updating the list, with the first revised edition published in 1921. Several changes have been made since then, the most recent revision being in 2012. There are currently 282 Munros and 226 Tops. The real explosion in the popularity of Munro bagging came in the late 1980s. Those who climb all the summits are, following old SMC tradition, known as 'compleaters.' I am Shahid Choudhary, a Scottish Pakistani originally from the small town of Mian Channu, Pakistan. I began my hiking journey in March 2016. Initially, I had no plans to join the list of 'compleaters,' but after reaching the halfway mark, I began to take it seriously. A few friends joined my journey, and to support them, I repeated several Munros to help my team members achieve higher numbers. By the time I completed my goal, two of my team members, Asrar Ahmad and Ifty Ahmed, also reached their double centuries. During the pandemic, our goal was put on hold, but after it ended, we resumed our journey. All team members had regular jobs and only had weekends free for our adventures, which were subject to weather conditions. During this time, we also summited several Corbetts (mountains in Scotland between 2,500 and 3,000 feet high) and completed many famous long-distance walks, such as the West Highland Way. To enhance my knowledge of outdoor adventures, I undertook training for Lowland Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader, Mountain Leader, Camping Leader, and First Aid. When asked about my most memorable outdoor adventure, I replied, "Every single day of adventure is memorable in its own way," but highlighted a few unforgettable experiences: - The wilderness of Knoydart. - The reflections of mountains on Loch Hourn. - The winter wonderland of Sgùrr Èilde Mòr from Kinlochleven. - The amazing sunrise on Loch Ba, Glen Coe. - Shaky legs on the Cuillin Ridge. - Cloud inversions on Beinn Alligin. - Full-scale rainbows beside Bla Bheinn. - A Brocken spectre on Lochnagar. - Ravens cleverly opening zippers of my rucksack. - Coping with thirst while doing the Loch Mullardoch Munros. - Sleep deprivation during a 24-hour trip to the most northerly Munros, Ben Hope and Ben Klibreck. - Being eaten by midges in Glen Etive. - Turning back just 100 meters from a summit due to risk and returning to complete it later. - Running from a summit to avoid an approaching thunderstorm. - Struggling with a map when the compass needle was unreliable. - Seeing an adder for the first time. - Being woken by a fox trying to enter my tent. - Falling into a snow-covered burn and walking in chest-deep water. - Falling on Ben Dorain and experiencing -22°C temperatures, resulting in frostbite and numb fingers for two days.

Each adventure taught me new techniques and ways to tackle challenges. Beyond achieving my goal, I emphasize the massive benefits of outdoor activities for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Whether for motivation, battling depression, or simply enjoying nature, outdoor activities provide numerous advantages. Fresh air and activity are scientifically proven to be highly beneficial. In today's hectic life, I encourage everyone to find time for themselves and explore the outdoors. I believe that doing so can alleviate depression and reduce the need for medication for various health issues. When outside, please take only memories and leave only footprints. Take home every piece of rubbish to preserve the beauty of our outdoors, beaches, and wildlife. Respect the interests of others, care for the environment, and take responsibility for your actions.

Fundraising for Scottish Mountain Rescue

I am fundraising for Scottish Mountain Rescue, an organisation that embodies the spirit of selflessness and bravery.
